Marion junior Chloe DeLyser didn’t just break one state scoring record on Friday night. She broke two.

DeLyser, a junior at Marion, scored the 252nd goal of her career 2:48 into the first half to break the career mark set by Madisyn Pezzino of Grand Island (Section VI) in 2016, as the top-seeded Black Knights rolled over No. 9 Pembroke in a Section V Class C2 quarterfinal.

DeLyser went on to score four more goals to bring her season total to 75 and eclipse the state single-season record of 73 set by Brittany LaPlant of Queensbury in 2013.

The record-breaker was a bit of a family affair. Senior Abigail DeFisher laid off a pass to junior Sarah Lange. Lange fed the ball through to DeLyser who used her speed to break away and finish. Both Lange and DeFisher are DeLyser’s cousins.

“Chloe is a special player and her team was thrilled for her when she broke the record,” said Marion coach Lori DeLyser, who is Chloe’s cousin. “Chloe is always thanking her teammates when she scores goals and she loves to set up goals for her teammates.”

Chloe DeLyser, a fifth-year varsity player who has committed to playing at Ohio State, was glad she broke the first record and had no idea that she was chasing the second.
