FIRST TEAM:
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Sabrina Ionescu, Miramonte (Orinda, Calif.)
Erin Boley, Elizabethtown (Ky.)
Crystal Dangerfield, Blackman (Murfreesboro, Tenn.)
Lauren Cox, Flower Mound (Texas)
PLAYER PROFILE:
Name: Jackie Young
School: Princeton, Ind.
Position: Guard
Height: 6-foot
College: Notre Dame
Details: Averaged 34.9 points, 9 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 3.9 steals in leading Princeton to a 27-1 record. Set the state scoring career record, surpassing the total set by Damon Bailey of 3,134, shortly after surpassing thegirls mark of 3,085, set by Shanna Zolman.
Favorite teachers: Mrs. (Robyn) Slayton. She was my fifth-grade teacher. I could relate to the classroom, like the court. She pushed me hard in her classroom, the way I like to be pushed on the floor. Also, Kelli McDonald. She was more of a mentor type who was always willing to listen to me rant about things and always had good words of wisdom. She was my English teacher in the 11th grade (at Princeton) and this year, I’m her teaching assistant for third period.
Second-best athlete in the family: I’d go with my younger sister, Kiare. She’s a sophomore.
Favorite musician: Justin Bieber.
Most embarrassing favorite song: Probably just Bieber songs, because everybody laughs when I say I like Justin Bieber’s songs.
People say I look like: My younger sister.
Favorite book: The Pat Summit book, “Sum It Up: A Thousand and Ninety-Eight Victories, a Couple of Irrelevant Losses, and a Life in Perspective.”.
Biggest basketball influences: Probably my family. I grew up playing basketball. Just being around them led me to play basketball. My older brother played basketball and my older cousin, Travis Trice, played for Michigan State.
Meeting Damon Bailey: I met him last year during a home visit from Butler. We didn’t talk about (his scoring record). He wrote on his picture, “One great player to another.”
First car I drove: My brother’s Grand Am. I don’t remember the year.
Dream car and white: A Range Rover in white.
Slogan for student council: I didn’t have one.
USA Basketball disappointment: That definitely drove me, not making the (2014 U-17) team. After not making the team, I was disappointed, but I used it as motivation. I felt like I started working harder.
Season highlight: Winning the Hall of Fame Classic (in New Castle) and also when I broke Shanna Zolman’s record and Damon Bailey’s record.
