HAMPTON, Va. – Now that his father has taken a job as an assistant coach on Washington’s staff, Mokan Elite (Mo.) forward Michael Porter Jr. will relocate from Columbia, Mo., to Washington with his family in August.
That’s good news for one of the high schools in Washington; after all Porter, who is ranked No. 3 overall in the ESPN 60, did lead Father Tolton Catholic to a state title in March.
“Ending the school year with a state title was awesome,” Porter said. “When I broke the news to my coach that I was leaving it was all love. I told him, ‘At least we went out with the title.’”
Porter was one of only two underclassmen to make the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Boys Basketball Teams.
Now the big question is: Where will Porter end up?
“The schools that I’m considering are Rainier Beach, Seattle Prep, Garfield or maybe another school,” said Porter. “Either way, I’d be really excited to be able to play at any of those schools. Just to be able to start new is exciting to me.”
Federal Way (Federal Way, Wash.) was the only boys’ basketball team in the state to finish in the USA TODAY High School Sports Super 25 last season. The No. 17 Eagles went 29-0.
Still, Porter has the kind of all-around talent that will make whichever school he lands at an instant contender.
“I’ll be ready to work wherever I go,” Porter said. “I definitely want another state title.”
