Sabrina Ionescu accepted her American Family Insurance ALL-USA Girls Basketball Player of the Year trophy this week during a ceremony in front of her classmates on the senior lawn at Miramonte High in Orinda, Calif.
Ionescu led the team to the state Open Division championship game, averaging 25.3 points, 8.8 assists, 7.6 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 1.3 blocks. She later was named Most Valuable Player of the McDonald’s All American Game in Chicago and took part in the Jordan Brand Classic.
During her four-year career, the Lady Mats went 119-10.
Next up for Ioenescu is the end of her unorthodox recruiting process. Ranked No. 4 in the senior class by ESPNw HoopGurlz rankings, she is down to Oregon and Washington. The late signing period ended Wednesday, but Ionesco is now likely to wait until graduation to make a decision.
“She doesn’t want the fanfare,” coach Kelly Sopak told USA TODAY High School Sports in March. “If she could just drive to whatever school she picks and show up on the first day of school, that would be her choice.”
Nicknamed “The Franchise,” Ionescu was almost always the best player on the court, but her impact goes further. She was asked to pose for pictures and signs autographs virtually everywhere the team went and also served to help coach teams of young girls.
