Chino Hills (Calif.) celebrated its perfect 35-0 boys basketball season, state Open Division championship and national honors for coach Steve Baik and star player Lonzo Ball during a ceremony Friday at the school’s football stadium.
USA TODAY High School Sports was on hand to present the Super 25 championship to the team, which dominated with an up-tempo style and regularly reached 100 points. The Huskies capped the season with a 70-50 defeat of De La Salle (Concord) in the Open Division title game.
Baik was named the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Coach of the Year for leading the team in what will be his final season at the school. Baik, who psoted an overall record of 151-37, resigned two weeks ago in hopes of finding a position at school closer to his home. He is expected to take over at Fairfax in Los Angeles, according to longtime Fairfax coach Harvey Kitani.
The UCLA-bound Ball was named the ALL-USA Player of the Year. He averaged 23.6 points, 11.5 rebounds and 11.4 assists per game and was the Gatorade State Player of the Year. “Winning state was the goal the whole year,” Ball said. “That’s the biggest accomplishment.”
