Kylie Swiekatowski, a University of Rice commit and De Pere (Wisconsin) track and field athlete, only competed in one event at the WIAA state track and field championship last Friday. She performed better at that event than anyone has ever done at the Division 1 level. Swiekatowski broke the Division 1 pole vault record with a clearance of 12 feet, seven inches. With that jump, Swiekatowski won her second state title in three years and has four state medals in the pole vault.
Swiekatowski’s performance at the WIAA state track and field championship leads the American Family Insurance Performances of the Week.
The rest of the performances of the week as spring sports begin wrapping up:
Erin Hunt, softball, Webberville (Michigan)
Hunt was the dominant ace that Webberville needed to secure the Michigan Division III district title. She threw a no-hitter in a victory over Hanover-Horton in the final and struck out 19 in the semifinal, a win over Leslie.
Quinn Hoffman, baseball, Cathedral Catholic (California)
Hoffman hit two singles, stole a base and scored a run in a 5-2 Open Division championship win over Eastlake. If that last name sounds familiar to you, it’s because Hoffman is the eldest son of ex-Padre closer Trevor Hoffman.
Hailey Derosia, softball, Brattleboro (Vermont)
The freshman shortstop flashed glimpses of her potential last week, as she had four hits, two doubles, and a home run to go along with six RBIs in a win over South Burlington last week.
Jason Cerniglia, baseball, Sierra Catholic (Pennsylvania)
Cerniglia provided the spark at the plate that Sierra Catholic needed to advance in the playoffs, as he hit a two run triple in the WPIAL Class A title game. Cerniglia then went 4-for-4 in a 4-3 win against Portage.
Erika Kisting, girls track and field, Iola-Scandinavia (Wisconsin)
Kisting won two events at the WIAA state track and field championship last week. She barely held on to win the 3200-meter race, finishing ahead of the runner-up by .03 seconds. Kisting didn’t want to deal with that stress on Day 2 and blew by the rest of the field in the 1600, as she was faster by two full seconds.
D.J. Snide, boys track and field, Bellows Falls (Vermont)
There were some exceptional individual performances in Vermont this week. Snide was dominant at the state championship meet as he won the 110 meter hurdles, 300 hurdles and triple jump. Bellows Falls has won four consecutive track and field state titles.
Avery Jackson, softball, Mattoon (Illinois)
Jackson excelled from the leadoff spot in two playoff games last week, as she went 4-for-8 with four runs scored and she also hit a double.
Miguel Carrillo, baseball, Hoover (California)
Carrillo was the definition of clutch as he allowed just four hits, no walks and no runs in a 5-0 win over San Diego Jewish to win Hoover’s first state title since 1983. Carrillo added a triple in the game for good measure.
Macie Pennington, girls soccer, Caravel (Delaware)
The junior was instrumental in helping Caravel win their third consecutive division II state championship. She scored in a 3-0 win over Sanford in the semifinals and added an assist in a 2-0 win over Indian River in the final.
