Beacon (N.Y.) High School’s Rayvon Grey did it again. The senior jumped 24 feet, 3-1/2 inches to be crowned national champion in the long jump at the New Balance Nationals outdoor track and field event on Sunday in Greensboro, N.C.
“I felt like I had a really good chance of winning,” Grey said. “But what I ended up jumping wasn’t what I really wanted (Sunday).”
What with all of Grey’s success lately, who could blame him for raising the bar?
The LSU-bound jumper only last week broke ex-Olympian Bob Beamon’s state record en-route of clinching yet another state title in the long jump.
Next week, Grey says, he’s heading down to California for the Junior National trials.
“Going in (to the trials) I know what I need to work on,” he said. “I’m getting fired up for the competition.”
Gray was selected to the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Preseason Boys Track and Field Team and is a strong contender for the ALL-USA Team to be announced in early July.
