Most high school coaches feel lucky to be part of one winning season, let alone a conference or state championship. But McDonogh School coach Chris Robinson has a system in place that has afforded him much more.
And as the leader of the most prestigious scholastic girls lacrosse program in the country, Robinson took his team to an eighth consecutive IAAM “A” Conference championship, perhaps the most coveted state crown in the girls game.
The title capped a seventh consecutive undefeated season, upped McDonogh’s winning streak to 155 games and helped make Robinson the choice as American Family Insurance ALL-USA Girls Lacrosse Coach of the Year.
After beating Century 12-11 in overtime in its one true test of the season, McDonogh never looked back, winning the final three games of the season by a combined 53-19 and taking down Roland Park for the crown 15-7 on May 15.
The streak of 155 consecutive wins will likely stand for many years as the longest recorded win streak in team sports. It brought the team national attention this season as media outlets far and wide published stories on the team’s accomplishment.
Forever tied to that achievement as the coach who has orchestrated McDonogh’s success, Robinson is not one to seek attention for his program, but rather a coach who has let his alumni go on to college and do the talking for it. The likes of Taylor Cummings and Casey Pepperman have been a part of the Eagles’ run and have gone on to shine in college, helping create a strong pipeline to the powerful University of Maryland program.
But for all his deflection of the attention, Robinson is the one who put the system in place and the helped cultivate an environment to turn McDonogh into the game’s top girls high school program.
