Tate Martell will graduate early this week, but not from Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas).
The quarterback who went 43-0 as a starter for the three-time Super 25 champion Gaels wants to get on campus early at Ohio State to acclimate himself to the Buckeyes’ system.
To do that, he has to graduate early, which is not permitted at Bishop Gorman, school principal Kevin Kiefer confirmed.
With only a few weeks to go in the semester and shortly after helping the Gaels win their eighth consecutive 4A state title, Martell transferred to Desert Pines (Las Vegas), which is about 22 miles away from Bishop Gorman.
“I had to transfer to Desert Pines to graduate early,” Martell told USA TODAY High School Sports. “I graduate on Friday.”
While Martell might have helped Desert Pines’ football team had he arrived earlier, the Jaguars did pretty well without him, winning their first 3A state title. Desert Pines is his third high school as he played as a freshman at Poway, Calif.
Martell is a finalist for the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Offensive Player of the Year Award.
Interestingly, Trinity Christian Academy (Jacksonville, Fla.) defensive back Shaun Wade, one of the candidates for the ALL-USA Defensive Player of the Year, also said he would graduate early so he could be on campus at Ohio State in January.
Wade reaffirmed his commitment to the Buckeyes on Monday.
