2017 American Family Insurance ALL-USA High School Preseason Softball Team

USA TODAY High School Sports is unveiling the American Family Insurance ALL-USA High School Preseason Softball Team for 2016-17. Players were selected based on high school performance, level of competition and strength of schedule.

The team has five pitchers, two catchers, six infielders, three outfielders and four utility players. There are also five honorable mention selections.

California boasts nine of the 25 selections, led by shortstop Bri Perez from Alhambra (Martinez, Calif.), rated as the No. 1 player in the Class of 2017 by FloSoftball.com. Kentucky, New Jersey and Texas all have two players on the team, while Alabama, Arizona, Hawaii, Indiana, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oregon, Virginia and Wisconsin each have one.

Note that more than a half dozen states, including Georgia, Missouri and Oklahoma, play high school softball in the fall. Players who have already completed their 2016-17 seasons are not recognized on this list but are eligible for inclusion on the year-end ALL-USA High School Softball Team.

Holly Azevedo Position: P School: Pioneer (San Jose, Calif.) Year: Senior College: UCLA Noteworthy: Azevedo was magnificent in 2016, leading the Mustangs to the California Central Coast Section Division II championship game. A member of the 2017 Junior National Team, Azevedo was 25-3 with a 0.18 ERA and 334 strikeouts in 191 innings pitched. At the plate, she batted .482 with six doubles. Photo: Marissa Ramirez

Montana Fouts Position: P/1B School: East Carter (Grayson, Ky.) Year: Junior College: Alabama Noteworthy: Fouts was 33-2 with a 0.48 ERA and 479 strikeouts in 221 innings pitched as a sophomore, firing 14 no-hitters, including nine perfect games. The 6-foot-2 right-hander led the Raiders to a 37-2 record and a fifth-place finish at the Kentucky state tournament. Alexis Holloway Position: P School: Crown Point (Ind.) Year: Senior College: Notre Dame Noteworthy: Rated as the No. 2 recruit in the Class of 2017 by FloSoftball.com, Holloway split time in the circle a year ago with All-USA First Team selection Miranda Elish. Holloway was an honorable mention All-USA pick after posting a 13-0 record with a 0.38 ERA and 176 strikeouts in 92.2 innings pitched. She also batted .398 with 27 runs scored. Photo: Bill Dorulla

Natalie Lugo Position: P School: South Hills (West Covina, Calif.) Year: Senior College: Florida Noteworthy: Lugo was 18-6 with a 0.62 ERA and 279 strikeouts in 159.1 innings pitched a year ago, leading the Huskies to the California Southern Section Division 2 quarterfinals. Kelsey Oh Position: P School: Mount St. Dominic Academy (Caldwell, N.J.) Year: Senior College: South Carolina Noteworthy: A two-time Gatorade State Player of the Year, Oh was an All-USA Second Team selection a year ago after posting a 24-4 record with a 0.82 ERA and 310 strikeouts as she led the Lions to the New Jersey North Non-Public A championship game. Jocelyn Alo Position: C School: Campbell (Ewa Beach, Hawaii) Year: Senior College: Oklahoma Noteworthy: Alo led the Sabers to a 17-1 record and the Hawaii Division I state title in 2016, earning state tournament MVP honors. Mia Davidson Position: C/3B School: Orange (Hillsborough, N.C.) Year: Senior College: Mississippi State Noteworthy: Davidson enters the 2017 season needing just two home runs to set the North Carolina state record with 43. Considering she hit 18 bombs as a junior, that record will be Davidson’s sooner rather than later. The returning Gatorade State Player of the Year, Davidson also batted .740 a year ago with an .851 on-base percentage and a 2.060 slugging percentage.Photo: Davidson Family

Alexis “Lou” Allan Position: 1B School: Oak Hills (Hesperia, Calif.) Year: Senior College: Michigan Noteworthy: The 5-foot-7 Allan set school records for home runs (15), doubles (12), runs (46), RBI (43), on-base percentage (.660) and slugging percentage (1.270) in 2016. Mary Katherine Tedder Position: SS/2B School: Spain Park (Hoover, Ala.) Year: Senior College: Texas Noteworthy: A returning USA TODAY Second Team selection, Tedder crushed a school-record 20 homers, knocked in 74 runs and scored 56 times a year ago for the Jaguars.
