Rebekah Topham didn’t let a lack of sleep, sore calves or Pekin (Packwood) runner Gwynne Wright get in her way. On Saturday, the Griswold, Iowa, senior set a state record with her fourth consecutive individual title in the Class 1A cross country meet. She leads the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Performances of the Week.

Topham passed Wright around the two-kilometer mark and finished 26 seconds ahead of her, running the 4K course at the Fort Dodge’s Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in 14 minutes, 32.2 seconds. Priot to Tophham, only 50 girls nationally have won four individual state titles in cross country, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations record book and Topham is the first from Iowa.

“I didn’t sleep well last night, I kept thinking about the race,” Topham told the Des Moines Register. “I only slept two hours.”

Topham helped her team capture third place at the meet. She is considering Iowa State, Wichita State and Arkansas.

North Central (Spokane, Wash.) cross country runner Tanner Anderson didn’t buckle when Mt. Spokane (Spokane) runner John Dressel set a blistering early pace up a hill in the Washington 3A state cross country championship on Saturday. Anderson reeled Dressel back in, running a personal best of 14 minutes and 32 seconds to win the 5-kilometer race, at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. Anderson leads this week’s American Family Insurance ALL-USA Performances of the Week.

“A lot of times guys will wait it out in the middle but in this case, John put in a dead sprint going up a hill at about a mile and a half,” said North Central coach Jon Knight. “After a while, Tanner sensed that John wasn’t gaining on him and that maybe he was catching back to him. When Tanner did go by John, it was like John was standing still and he put 15 seconds him him. This is a hilly course and to run a time like that you have to have perfect weather and it was, 55 degrees, sunny, with no wind.”

Knight said Anderson, a senior who is considering Washington, North Carolina, Northern Arizona, Wisconsin and Syracuse, has steadily improved.

“We knew about him in junior high, but he had never really trained,” Knight said. “He kind of emerged his freshman year and has progressed since then. Last fall was a big breakout when he beat Joe Hardy at state. He’s very economical as a runner and has a good upside. We’re not a high-mileage program, and you have to have some place to grow.”

The rest of the ALL-USA Performances of the Week:

Harry Giles III was so pumped to be playing again in a high school basketball game that he made a freshman mistake, eating just a few hours before the first game of the season for No. 2-ranked Wesleyan Christian (High Point, N.C.) on Nov. 11.

“He was so excited that first game that he didn’t sleep the night before and had a cookout burger and some other food about 4:30 in the afternoon before our game,” Wesleyan Christian coach Keith Gatlin said. “He ended up cramping up and not playing but three minutes in the fourth quarter. We laughed about it later.”

Giles had an off-night, scoring only 14 points against New Hope Christian (Thomasville), but rest assured, the former freshman player of the year is back from tearing his anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament and meniscus in his left knee while playing for USA Basketball in the summer of 2013 and missing last season at Wesleyan.

The 6-9 junior power forward made that clear in Wesleyan’s second game, when he scored 41 points and had 19 rebounds in a 82-60 defeat of Northside Christian Academy (Charlotte) on Friday. Giles is one of five juniors on the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Preseason Boys Basketball Team.

“I was never concerned about him coming back,” Gatlin said. “A lot of people don’t see how much work Harry puts into his game and body. Sometimes I have to tell him to spend some time to be a normal young man.”

Wesleyan Christian, led by Theo Pinson, now at xxxx, won the 3A title last season as Giles watched with his injury.

“I love to play, so it was tough to sit on the sidelines and not play, because I am competitive,” Giles said this summer. “I have been injured a lot, unfortunately. But I had never been out that long. I never really got to thank everybody that helped me, like my close friends and my family. You find out who your real friends are when you’re hurt. My teammates and my coaches picked me up.”

Giles is less tentative with his knee than he was this summer, when he averaged 10.9 points and 6.1 rebounds a game for USA Basketball’s team that won the FIBA U17 World Championship.

Gatlin, a former North Carolina state player of the year at Conley (Greenville) in 1983, played at Maryland from 1984-88 and for several years professionally. Like Giles, he also had to come back from a knee injury, when he tore his ACL as a pro.

“The silver lining for Harry is he hurt himself when he was only a sophomore and he’s so young, he heals so quickly,” Gatlin said. “I tore my ACL when I was 27 or 28 and I had to work extremely hard for nine to 12 months. I spent time with Harry doing hot yoga, to keep him flexible. He put a lot of time in the pool, on the bike and in the weight room.”

What makes Giles special is his mobility, athleticism and shooting touch make him a matchup nightmare. He has a wingspan of 7-3, a standing reach of 9-1 and has hands that look like catchers’ mitts.

“Harry can really pass the basketball and that has made the transition easier for this year’s team,” Gatlin said. “He’s thinking pass first and can see the play before it develops. A lot of what he has is God-given talent. He has great guard skills for someone who is 6-10 (in shoes) and once he grabs a basketball, it’s like he’s grabbing a grapefruit or a baseball. It’s impossible to take it from him.”

Samuelson among three UConn signees on American Family Insurance All-USA preseason girls hoops team

Family, friends and teammates call her “Lou,” but future opponents might refer to Katie Lou Samuelson as a national champion.

The Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) 6-3 senior wing — widely considered the No. 1 girls basketball prospect in the nation — signed a letter of intent of the first day of the early signing period last week to play for Connecticut alongside USA Basketball teammates Napheesa Collier of Incarnate Word Academy (St Louis, Mo.) and De’Janae Boykin of Charles H. Flowers (Springdale, Md.) High. UConn is the defending national champ and a perennial favorite.

The three UConn recruits are members of the American Family Insurance All-USA girls basketball preseason team.

Samuelson said she appreciates the Huskies’ tight-knit bond, which reminds her of her close relationships with her star older sisters Karlie and Bonnie, both of whom play at Stanford.

“My sisters have always been there for me, and they supported my college decision,” Samuelson said. “Since I’ll be across the country, knowing that I have support in my team will be really good.

“This will be the first time I’ll be on my own, experiencing the world by myself. I’m pretty nervous, but excited.”

The family rivalry might have begun this week. Stanford ended UConn’s 47-game winning streak Monday, 88-86 in overtime. Katie Lou’s sisters combined for 22 points off the bench. On Tuesday, Stanford replaced UConn atop the USA TODAY Sports women’s basketball coaches poll.

“I was disappointed that UConn lost, but I was still so excited for my sisters and how well they played. It was a great game to watch,” Samuelson said.

Katie Lou Samuelson averaged 26 points and 10.1 rebounds and led Mater Dei to the quarterfinals of the Open Division state tournament and a 27-3 record last season. She was named the Gatorade California Girls Basketball Player of the Year and was a member of the All-USA team.

Samuelson aims to build on last year’s success after spending the offseason elevating team chemistry with frequent trips to Chipotle, organizing sleepovers and volunteering together for a community walk. She said she looks forward to stepping into the leadership role once again, drawing from her experiences as a member of the gold-medal winning USA Basketball under-16 team.

“She’s proven against the best players in the country,” said Mater Dei coach Kevin Kiernan, who enters his eighth season with the Monarchs. “She learned a lot from her experiences with USA Basketball, and she’s brought that back to us. She’s become a strong leader.”

Junior forward Ally Rosenblum added that Samuelson’s disposition has drawn teammates closer and influenced her to adopt an equally dedicated mentality and well-rounded approach to the game.

Kiernan is confident Samuelson will carry it forward to the Huskies next fall. But for now, “I want her to enjoy the journey this year. She has goals — she wants to win and be the best player in the country,” he said. “She’s going to have a great year. She’ll be fun to watch.”

Allonzo Trier is averaging 33.6 points and 6.5 rebounds a game for Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.).

Louisville Mercy middle blocker Lexie Hamrick, the state tournament MVP, landed on the Third Team.

No. 2 Redondo Union is represented by outside hitter Yaasmeen Bedart-Ghani, a top senior recruit, and Norene Iosia, one of the top underclass setters in the country. No. 3 Mount Notre Dame is represented by Coach of the Year Joe Burke, and No. 4 Lewis-Palmer is represented by First Team hitter Alexa Smith.

Iowan Mikaela Foecke is the 2014 National Player of the Year. Foecke didn’t just lead Holy Trinity Catholic to an Iowa state title, she carried the team, averaging almost 10 kills per set in three state tournament matches. No one hits harder than this Nebraska signee, who has an outstanding work ethic and the ability to excel anywhere along the front row.

First Team

Outside Hitter: Alexa Smith, 6-1, Sr., Lewis-Palmer (Monument, Colo.)
The 2013 PrepVolleyball.com National Junior of the Year excelled again this fall, leading undefeated Lewis-Palmer to a repeat state title in Colorado’s Class 4A and a consensus top five national ranking. Smith, a Purdue signee who is ranked as the No. 7 recruit in the Class of 2015, led the Rangers in kills, aces and digs. The USA Junior National Team member was named Colorado 4A Player of the Year.

Outside Hitter: Yaasmeen Bedart-Ghani, 6-4, Sr., Redondo Union (Redondo Beach, Calif.)
The No. 5 recruit nationally, Bedart-Ghani, an imposing hitter who has signed with Texas, missed the early part of the season because of a foot injury. When she returned, Redondo Union took off, winning its own Power Classic, the Southern Section title in brutal Division 1AA and its first California Division I title. For the season, Bedart-Ghani averaged 3.9 kills and 1.7 digs per set while adding 83 blocks. More importantly, her ability to take big swings and terminate on the biggest points led Redondo to a dream season and a No. 2 national ranking while playing a vicious schedule.

Middle Blocker: Mikaela Foecke, 6-3, Sr., Holy Trinity Catholic (Fort Madison, Iowa)
The No. 2 recruit nationally in the senior class and a member of the USA Junior National Team, Foecke rounded out her all-world resume with an Iowa state title this past fall. The Nebraska signee helped the Crusaders win the Iowa 1A title, dominating the competition to the tune of 821 kills (6.6 per set) while adding 170 aces, 270 digs and 95 blocks. Foecke was named Elite All-State Co-Player of the Year, Iowa Class 1A Player of the Year, All-Hawkeye Player of the Year and State Tournament MVP after averaging almost 10 kills per set in three tournament matches.

Middle Blocker: Tionna Williams, 6-2, Sr., Concordia Lutheran (Fort Wayne, Ind.)
Williams used her speed and extraordinary leaping ability to take Concordia to its first Indiana title in Class 3A. The No. 6 recruit in the country and a Wisconsin signee, Williams amassed 537 kills, 294 digs, 109 blocks and 66 aces for the 32-6 Cadets in 2014. She was named First Team All-State, the Indiana Class 3A Mental Award Winner and — for the second straight year — Fort Wayne-area Player of the Year.

Setter: Jordyn Poulter, 6-1, Sr., Eaglecrest (Centennial, Colo.)
The top senior setter in the country, Poulter had a remarkable year for the Raptors, who entered the Colorado 5A tournament seeded first despite having little experience and suspect ball control. The Illinois signee and USA Junior National Team star, rated the No. 3 recruit in the country, was a leader in every sense of the word. She elevated a young team well beyond where it should have gone and averaged a team-leading 10 assists per set in the process. The Colorado 5A Player of the Year also led Eaglecrest in aces and blocks and was second in kills, averaging more than three per set, despite setting exclusively.

Setter/Right Side Hitter: Jenna Tunnell, 5-11, Sr., Desert Vista (Phoenix)
A lefty setter/hitter with a fast arm and big jump, Tunnell made a massive impact in her only year with the Thunder after transferring from Boulder Creek and having to sit out the 2013 season. She led Desert Vista to its first Arizona Division I title while pacing the team in kills, averaging 2.8 per set. Tunnell, who has signed with Pepperdine and plans to play both indoor and sand volleyball, also was second in assists, averaging 4.5 per set, and finished among the top four in blocks (87), aces (41) and digs (199). She was named Big Schools Player of the Year by the Arizona Republic as well as East Valley Tribune Player of the Year.

Libero: Amber MacDonald, 5-4, Sr., Blessed Trinity (Roswell, Ga.)
A Top 100 Senior Ace who has signed with Wisconsin, MacDonald’s back-row prowess this fall helped Blessed Trinity win a second Georgia AAA title in the past three years. MacDonald, who is a sensational passer, averaged 5.1 digs per set for the Titans in 2014 and set a school single-season record for aces with 144. Three times an All-State performer, MacDonald finished No. 2 all-time in the state in digs and No. 5 all-time in aces.

Coach of the Year:
Joe Burke, Mount Notre Dame (Cincinnati)

Burke has led the Cougars for six years, has three Ohio Division I titles to his credit and a shiny 143-24 record over that span. His 2014 team finished 27-2 and lost only to the No. 1 and No. 6 teams nationally. The loss to No. 6 Toledo St. Ursula was later avenged in the state semifinals and knocked the Arrows from the unbeaten ranks. “In all three of his state championships, he beat an outstanding team of mine,” St. Ursula coach John Buck said. “He is a classy guy, coaches his kids and not the match. I really look forward to our match-ups. He has his team prepared and his team wins and loses with class. He doesn’t duck anyone; he goes out and tries to play the best schedule he can to prepare his team for the state run. My hat’s off to him!”

Second Team

Merideth Jewell: Outside Hitter, 6-0, Sr., Mercy Academy (Louisville, Ky.) — Committed to Morehead State.
Carly Skjodt: Outside Hitter, 6-1, Sr., Carmel (Ind.) — Michigan
Jess Schaben: Middle Blocker, 6-2, Sr., Harlan (Iowa) — Iowa State

From ALL-USA to College Football Playoff: Alabama leads by far

As you might guess, it takes great players to become among the elite teams in college football. And many of those great college players were outstanding high school players.

USA TODAY High School Sports looked back at the American Family Insurance ALL-USA football teams since 2010 to see how many members will be on the rosters Jan. 1. in the inaugural College Football Playoff. Ohio State faces Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and Oregon plays Florida State in the Rose Bowl.

RELATED: 2014 American Family Insurance ALL-USA Football team

Alabama is the leader with 20 selections (11 first-teamers and nine second-teamers; two players were selected twice). The Crimson Tide is followed by Ohio State with 11 (six first-teamers and five second-teamers; one player was selected twice). The Buckeyes’ total includes suspended defensive lineman Noah Spence.

Florida State has seven (three first-teamers and four second-teamers) and Oregon has two (both first-team).

This does not include players who declared early for the NFL draft and would still be in college. Some of these names will be more familiar than others, but all of them were prep stars.

Note: Year listed is the fall of their senior season so a 2010 ALL-USA player would have signed his letter of intent in February 2011.
