Washington commit Michael Porter, ESPN.com’s No. 2 basketball recruit in the Class of 2017, and his brothers will return to being homeschooled, he told Washington website #Dawgman.
Porter transferred from Father Tolton (Columbia, Mo.) to Nathan Hale in Seattle when his father took a job as an assistant coach with the Washington men’s basketball program. Michael Porter Sr. previously was on the women’s basketball coaching staff at Missouri.
Porter, a 6-10 small forward, and younger brother Jontay, a four-star power forward in the Class of 2018, have committed to the Huskies. Michael Porter was one of only two underclassmen to make the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Boys Basketball Teams in 2015-16.
The Porter family has eight children, with four kids younger than high school age. Those in high school were homeschooled before they reach high school. The two oldest, daughters Bri and Cierra, attended public school. Michael and Jontay went to Father Tolton when it opened in 2011. Tolton has less than 300 students.
“For the most part, I don’t know that he looks at himself as anything other than just being a normal student,” Tolton coach Jeremy Osborne told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in February. “It’s the outside that creates a lot of noise for him. He’s comfortable here because he’s just a normal dude.”
Porter and Hale are in action Sunday in fall league games.
